Prof Goverdhan Mehta, PhD (Poona) and DSc (h.c.) is Former President of the International Council for Science (ICSU). He is a Bhatnagan Fellow and former director of the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, a premier institution in the country. He has made notable and outstanding contributions in Chemical Sciences and specializes in the area of Organic Chemistry. He has also contributed to science education, science policy and planning and R&D efforts in India and abroad in many ways. He is on the Editorial Boards of many leading international journals in Chemical Sciences/Organic Chemistry.
Professor Mehta has many awards and honors to his credit, notable being the Humboldt Research Prize of Germany (being the first Indian to receive the award), Mercator Professor, (DFG) Germany, Medal from the Third World Academy of Sciences, Officier dans I'ordre Palmes Academiques by the President of France, and Padma Shri from the President of India. He has been exceptionally prolific in his scientific contributions, publishing more than 370 original research papers in international Journals of high repute. He is or has been a member of several national and international bodies.
