Jean Salençon, President of the French Academy of Sciences, is honorary professor at École polytechnique (Palaiseau, France) and at the École nationale des ponts et chaussées (Marne-la-Vallée, France) where he taught Continuum Mechanics, Soil Mechanics and Mechanics of Structures. His main areas of research are the theories of Elasticity, Viscoelasticity and Plasticity together with their applications to soil mechanics and structural engineering. He is the author of more than 160 publications among which textbooks and CD-Rom tutorials. He devoted many papers to stability analyses of slopes and surface footings under non standard conditions including seismic loading, based upon the theory of Yield Design which he contributed to formulate in a comprehensive presentation and to implement in computer codes.
